Tips on Creating a Media Pitch That Yields Results

If you feel that you have something newsworthy that a trade publication or local media outlet would care about—then a pitch may be the way to go, but it is a bit more time consuming.

In an earlier blog post, we talked about writing a press release. A media pitch is much different than just drafting a press release. A pitch is a targeted way to connect with a reporter and typically involves a news item that maybe only one or two media outlets would want to air or publish.

Here are some quick tips on creating an effective media pitch:

  • Send a very short and sweet email to a specific reporter. It shouldn’t be more than 2–3 short paragraphs outlining what your news or pitch is to them.
  • Include a who, what and why they should care.
  • The key to having a reporter take notice is not a clever headline, but offering something that is relevant to the news cycle.
  • DO YOUR RESEARCH. When pitching a reporter, you need to make sure that you look at all of the reporters/editors at a publication to make sure that it would be talking about the topic that you are trying to pitch. The worst thing you can do is send that pitch to the wrong reporter or publication because they will delete it.
  • Once you feel good about your pitch and the reporter you have chosen, email away. But absolutely make sure to follow-up with a phone call to ensure that they received it.

Pitching can be a great way to establish your credibility with a reporter. And if that reporter likes what they see and how you quickly and easily present your information, there is an opportunity to become a go-to source for stories down the road.

Happy pitching!
